In astronautics, a space station is a facility orbiting the Earth that allows humans to be housed in space. They are known as “orbital stations”. Although the first stations were launched in the 1970s, after the conquest of space, the one that will go down in history is the ISS, the International Space Station. It is the largest of the artificial objects in the Earth's orbit, and was launched and piloted by NASA after joint development with the federal space agency of Russia, many years after the Cold War. Launched in 1998, the ISS is in orbit to this day, and gathers together American, Canadian, European, Japanese, Russian, and Brazilian astronauts. 
The endurance limit of the materials is determined by failure criteria that are reduced using specific safety coefficients. In the case of the Orbital, the resistance of the steel/aluminium/nickel alloy is pushed to its upper limit. The solidity of the materials, coupled with the lightness of the aluminium, is precisely suitable for stabilising the structure of the alloy. A rigorous procedure must be followed, and it is essential that the pieces are high quality. Both the materials used and the visual demands of the structure make TIG welding necessary. To complete the structure, the essential element is the patina, which alone requires a particular level of expertise. The patina and specific gilt are produced according to the desired finish, whether this is ancient or contemporary.
